Faris Shafi is not only the brother of Meesha Shafi but also a famous rapper but somehow his rap song has offended author and sociologist Nida Kirmani who has advised the singer to leave rapping.
The author shared her thoughts on Twitter that ‘rap is an art form of the marginalised’ hence, Faris should leave it be, she posted.
Class & ethnic privilege effect every field in Pakistan, but one of its most profound effects is on the arts. From music to literature to tv/film, most of those who make it big are members of the Punjabi elite. Coke studios throws in some Sindhis & Baloch as tokens but that’s it.

However, like many social media users, Meesha Shafi strongly disagreed and supported her brother by calling out Kirmani on her “problematic” perspective.
That’s a bit flat and problematic as a general perspective. Faris and I were raised by an extremely hard working, very financially stressed single mother. We do not come from money. Are you suggesting, just because she put her sweat and tears into

Now after Shafi, many social media users have come forward with different opinions but most of them supported Shafi. Let’s have a look:
my take on the nida kirmani/faris shafi thing is that (and the irony isnt lost on me) not everything that exists is waiting to be analysed for a hot take to emerge. somethings are ok just existing

Was reading @NidaKirmani‘s tweets about Faris Shafi making it big because of his ‘class privilege’. Just want to say that the argument has no merit. None whatsoever. Don’t know what the motivation for the tweet was, but usefulness was definitely not it. Attention seeking maybe?

Thanks to Nida Kirmani, Faris Shafi is getting the recognition that (I don’t know if) he deserves. https://t.co/BPEeAit9N6

Faris Shafi being singled out because he used Alfredo Fettucine in a rap verse. If that doesn’t scream desi elite, idk what does. https://t.co/mQm4jBRfuC
