Pakistanis are celebrating Muhajir culture day, it’s trending on social media as well.
Upon the creation of Pakistan in 1947, millions of muhajrs and migrants from India made Karachi their new home, settling alongside the native Sindhi population.
Who is Muhajir?
In Urdu, the term ‘Muhajir’ means a migrant or refugee whose decision to leave their homeland is directly related to the preservation of their faith.
A Muhajir is someone who has performed the act of hijarat, which comes from Arabic and connotes ‘separation, migration, flight, specifically the flight of the Prophet from Mecca to Medina’.
The term united the refugees on religious grounds and gave them a common cause; having sacrificed their homeland to be part of Pakistan to protect their faith, they believed that the state should give them special status.
Urdu speaking community and modern history
The independence of Pakistan in 1947 saw the settlement of Muslim from India especially from the part of Punjab which remained in India after its division.
The Muslim migrants left behind all their land and properties in India when they migrated and some were partly compensated by properties left by Hindus that fled from Pakistan to India to escape the communal violence. The
Muslim Gujaratis, Konkanis, Hyderabadis, Marathis, Rajasthanis and Biharis fled India and settled in Karachi.
The non-Urdu-speaking Muslim refugees from India now speak the Urdu language and have assimilated into the wider community of Muhajirs.
What is Muhajir culture?
Muhajir culture is the culture of Urdu-speaking nation that migrated mainly from North India after the independence of Pakistan in 1947 generally to Karachi. Many Muhajirs of Pakistan is closely related to the Muslims of Uttar Pradesh in India.
