ISLAMABAD: Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has sacked thirteen players including pacer Wahab Riaz, wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal, middle-order batter Sohaib Maqsood.
A notification states, “In pursuance of WAPDA Sports Board letter no WSB/GS/C008/2165 dated 13 – 12 – 2021, following cricketers of Power Wing Sports Association (PWSA) Hydel are hereby relieved from their duties.”
These cricketers were employed in WAPDA Sports Board on contract but their salaries and benefits were suspended since September. WAPDA had informed all the players that their contracts cannot be extended.
The list includes former Pakistan captain Salman Butt, Sadaf Mehdi, Ehsan Adil, Sohrab Khan, Mohammad Asif, Zahid Mahmood, Shahid Tariq, and Mahindar Pal Singh. Moreover, the stipend contract of Jahanzaib Abdullah was also terminated, while Ali Rafique has been asked to join the duty immediately.
Kamran Akmal is currently playing for the Peshawar Zalmi skippered by Wahab Riaz. However, Akmal is ruled out of the opening matches after he tested positive for COVID-19 and has been placed in self-isolation.
The seventh season of PSL commenced on Thursday at the National Stadium in Karachi. Defending champion Multan Sultans defeated Karachi Kings by seven wickets in the inaugural match of the tournament.
