New York: The United Nations (UN) has stated that the world has failed to eradicate poverty, hunger, and destitution. Due to war and financial constraints, achieving key developmental goals has become challenging.
According to details, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said during a briefing in New York that global failures in promoting peace, addressing climate change, and providing financial aid have been detrimental to the development process. Member states had pledged in 2015 to achieve sustainable development goals.
During the briefing, the UN Secretary-General mentioned that it was essential for member states to fulfill the 17 goals by 2030, which included the complete eradication of extreme poverty, hunger, and destitution. However, the world has failed to achieve these goals. It is crucial to expedite measures for sustainable development.
Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the global community must come forward to eliminate poverty, hunger, and destitution; we cannot afford to waste even a moment.
The estimated progress towards achieving the sustainable development goals is 17%. Member states have failed to advance in many areas. Progress in renewable energy sources, internet access, and reducing HIV infections is commendable.
He added that many people around the world are still deprived of basic necessities of life, and this situation is not only unacceptable but also unforgivable for the global community. It is necessary to resolve major wars and conflicts globally and establish a sustainable and eco-friendly society to ensure peace.
