U.S. President Donald Trump lauded Pakistan’s leadership during his first bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House on Thursday. The meeting marked their first official engagement since Merz assumed office on May 6.
During a joint appearance, President Trump recalled his diplomatic intervention during a recent flare-up between Pakistan and India, saying that tensions were on the verge of spiraling out of control. “It was getting close to being out of hand,” Trump remarked, noting that he had spoken directly with both countries’ leaders to help de-escalate the situation.
Trump underscored the significance of strong leadership on both sides. “The leader of India, a big guy, was here a few weeks ago and we had great talks — and Pakistan, likewise. They have very strong leadership. Some people may not like me saying that, but it is what it is,” he said.
The crisis erupted following a deadly attack in Pahalgam, in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 tourists.
India blamed Pakistan and responded with aggressive actions, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, halting trade, and sealing border crossings. Pakistan retaliated with reciprocal measures, including closing its airspace. The confrontation escalated into cross-border missile strikes and air raids, leaving dozens dead.
