ISLAMABAD: An in-camera meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security has commenced at the Parliament House to discuss the matters pertaining to the security of the country and the situation in Afghanistan.
According to details, the in-camera session is being briefed about the situation in Afghanistan, India, and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed is briefing the parliamentary committee.
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa and the Director-General (DG) of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Babar Iftikhar are also in attendance.
Important leaders of the Opposition parties in Parliament are also present in the meeting. Opposition leaders include the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, Senator Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, JUI-F Parliamentary leader Maulana Asad Mahmood, and ANP leader Ameer Haider Azam Khan Hoti.
Prime Minister Imran Khan is not attending the meeting. Carrying of mobile phones inside the meeting room is prohibited, therefore, the phones of all participants have been taken away. The audio and video recording of the meeting will be sealed before the Speaker.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has announced that he will be attending the National Security Committee (NSC) meeting in Afghanistan.
Taking to Twitter, Bilawal said that he had demanded on the National Assembly for a briefing for the Parliament on the situation in Afghanistan by the relevant departments and institutions. “We welcome speaker’s decision and will participate in NSC committee meeting on the topic,” said the PPP chairperson.
Later, while speaking to the media outside the parliament, Bilawal claimed that the speaker had summoned a meeting of the NSC on his party’s recommendation. He also said that he does not consider Prime Minister Imran Khan’s comments on giving military bases to the US after the withdrawal of NATO troops.
“We will keep our point of view over giving military bases in the NSC committee,” said Bilawal. He also claimed that the NSC was formed on the recommendation of the PPP.
