UMERKOT: Civil society organization and activists from all throughout the province took part in a demonstration headed, among others, by the daughter of Dr. Shahnawaz Kunbhar, a blasphemy suspect who was purportedly slain by police in a fictitious encounter last week.
The demonstration took place outside the Umerkot Press Club, where protesters chanted slogans such as “Sindh’s soil needs peace” and “The land of peace needs peace.”
The speakers at the protest demanded an investigation into who had incited the mob through social media to target Dr. Shahnawaz, who had urged people to deny him burial in his ancestral graveyard and burn his body.

Dr. Shahnawaz’s daughter, Hareem Kunbhar, pointed out that it had not been proven her father committed blasphemy, noting that the social media account in question was not registered in his name but under the name of a “Shah Nawaz Shah.”
Prominent activist Comrade Punhal Sario, among others, addressed Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, criticizing the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman for claiming leadership of a democratic and secular party while Tharparkar MNA Ameer Ali Shah Jeelani was seen honoring the police officers involved in Dr. Shahnawaz’s extrajudicial killing.
