Hundreds of teachers gathered outside the Karachi Press Club on Wednesday to protest for regular employment status. The protesting teachers later began marching towards the Sindh Assembly, but police baton-charged them to prevent them from reaching the assembly premises.
The protesting teachers belong to various districts across Sindh, including Karachi. They are demanding the implementation of the Sindh government’s promise to make their appointments permanent.
On Wednesday, the teachers started marching toward the Sindh Assembly from the Karachi Press Club. However, when they reached the Arts Council roundabout, police stopped them and resorted to baton-charging to disperse them. A large number of female teachers also participated in the protest.
Due to the police baton-charging, some teachers were injured, and due to the scorching heat, some fainted.
It should be noted that these temporary teachers, appointed by the federal government for special initiatives of the National Commission for Human Development and Basic Education Community Schools, were supposed to be absorbed into Sindh province’s education department, but the order has yet to be implemented.
