Ridley Scott, director of “Black Hawk Down”, which dramatized the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, is now revisiting the story in a new docuseries.
Set for release on Netflix in February 2025, “Surviving Black Hawk Down” takes a more authentic approach, providing a true-to-life account of the battle with input from those who were there on both sides of the conflict. While Scott’s production company, RSA Films, is involved, the series is directed by Jack MacInnes.
The docuseries centers on October 3, 1993, when U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force soldiers launched an operation in Mogadishu to capture militia leaders loyal to General Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The mission spirals into chaos after RPGs down three Blackhawk helicopters, setting the stage for one of the most intense urban battles in U.S. military history.
With firsthand accounts from soldiers and survivors, the documentary captures the harrowing experience of being surrounded and fighting against overwhelming odds. It also features news report audio that conveys the global response to the event, alongside perspectives from Somali fighters and civilians, including the devastating effects of U.S. airstrikes on families and the cycle of retaliation that followed.
When will the docuseries be released?
Surviving Black Hawk Down will be released on Netflix on February 10, 2025.
