ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has ordered to reopen all shopping malls across the country which were closed due to coronavirus pandemic.
Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed conducted the hearing in which he declared the government’s decision to keep the businesses closed on weekends void.
The CJP issued the orders during the hearing of the suo-motu notice regarding the coronavirus taken by the Supreme Court.
“You don’t want to purchase clothes but others want to do so,” the CJP remarked while pointing to officials appearing before the court in the case. He added there are a lot of families that manage to wear new clothes only on the occasion of Eid.
“Instead of scaring them make them understand,” remarked the CJP, after the commissioner told the court that some markets were sealed for violating SOPs.
The court also ordered that small markets should be allowed to remain open on Saturdays and Sundays.
He also ordered commissioner Karachi and additional advocate general Sindh to not seal markets even if they violate the Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs).
The CJP directed the city administration to ensure the implementation of the SOPs instead of sealing the markets.
