The price of sugar continues its steep climb even during Muharram, with rates now edging dangerously close to Rs 200 per kilogram, warned the Wholesale Groceries Association Friday.
According to Association Chairman Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, the wholesale price of sugar has risen by Rs 2.32 per kg, bringing it up to Rs 184 per kg. In retail markets, sugar is now being sold at Rs 196 per kg and could soon hit the Rs 200 mark, he cautioned.
“If immediate action is not taken against the sugar mafia, prices will cross Rs 200 per kg,” Ibrahim said, pointing out that despite the surge, sugar stocks remain abundant.
He urged authorities to launch a crackdown on all those involved in market manipulation, blaming hoarders and profiteers for burdening the public with billions of rupees in additional costs.
“This artificial price hike is not due to shortage but due to unchecked exploitation,” he added, stressing the urgent need for regulatory intervention to bring relief to consumers.
