ISLAMABAD: Sugar prices continue to rise across the country, with it being the most expensive in Karachi and the cheapest in Larkana.
In a report released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the most expensive price of sugar in Karachi has reached Rs 110 per kg, while the average price of sugar in the country has reached Rs 98.50 per kg.
In six cities of the country, sugar has reached Rs 100 per kg, in Islamabad and Rawalpindi it has reached Rs 105 per kg, in Quetta, Bahawalpur, Sialkot, Multan and Peshawar the price of sugar has reached Rs 100 per kg.
According to PBS, the price of sugar in Hyderabad has gone up to Rs 98 to Rs 100 per kg, while in Faisalabad the price of sugar has gone up to Rs 98 per kg. Khuzdar 97, Sargodha 96, Sukkur 98, Larkana 95, Bannu sugar is being sold at Rs 95 per kg.
Earlier a report revealed that customers were forced to buy sugar from the open markets at high prices due to the unavailability of the commodity at the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) outlets across the country.
Sources said the situation had created problems for citizens, who are forced to buy it from the shops for Rs30-35 more compared to what it was being sold for in utility stores.
According to reliable sources, the Utility Stores Corporation does not have enough sugar stock available in the country and in order to remedy the situation. Sources claimed that the USC currently lacks the required stock of sugar, due to which six tenders have been issued to purchase the commodity.
However, only 20,000 metric tonnes of sugar were bought on the last tender. They further confirmed that it may take one to two weeks for local sugar to be available in stores.
