Sugar price goes down at Utility Stores

The Utility Stores Corporation (USC) has announced a Rs13 per kilogram reduction in sugar prices, bringing the new rate at its outlets down to Rs140 per kg, effective immediately.

Geo News reported that this price drop follows negotiations with sugar mills, which agreed to lower their selling price to USC by Rs17 per kg.

Previously, sugar was priced at Rs153 per kg at utility stores, making the current cut a significant relief for consumers amid rising commodity prices.

The USC secured a procurement of 12,000 metric tonnes of sugar from mills at a negotiated rate of Rs137 per kg. Although this is below the previous wholesale price, the USC’s net cost for delivering sugar to stores—including storage, transportation, and administrative expenses—averaged around Rs152 per kg.

By obtaining rebates from sugar mill owners, the USC aims to make sugar more affordable without incurring further losses.
