LAHORE: The medical students have staged a protest at the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) over the issues of admissions on merit basis.
According to the protesters, the exams were canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak so, its unfair to keep the selection criteria the same as it is followed previously. Protesting students are demanding to increase the weightage of ETEA to 70 percent so students can get admissions on merit.
The protesters also stated that almost 150,000 students appeared in the government-administered medical college entry tests, however, only 15,000 (10 percent) students get admissions in 114 public and private sector medical colleges of Pakistan.
President MSM Irfan Yousaf while addressing the protest said that it is not acceptable that students who are capable are not evaluated well. “So, we demand to increase the weightage of ETEA from 50 to 70 percent,” he said.
According to Yousuf, PMDC should delay ETEA exams and the criteria of admission for medical students must be revised.
