KARACHI: Officials of the Sui South Gas Company (SSGC) are allegedly demanding bribes to provide new gas connections in Korangi and Malir areas of Karachi.
Muhammad Shahzad, a resident of Musa Khel in Chashma Goth, said that he has applied for a gas connection two-and-half years. He submitted a challan of Rs16,000 and even paid a bribe of Rs10,000 but has failed to receive the gas connection. He alleged the SSGC is demanding Rs50,000 through the contractor to provide the gas connection.
While speaking to MM News, Shahzad said he submitted a request over two years ago and paid the demand draft to receive the connection. He said despite paying the amount, he had not received the gas connection even though several other residents in the locality have received it.
He claimed the SSGC officials asked him to either undergo further gas drilling or pay the amounts. He said he brought labourers for the drilling but SSGC officials demanded to make a payment of Rs10,000 as bribe to receive the connection.
Shahzad said he paid the amount to contractor Lal Bahadur who did not provide the gas connection. Instead, he was told to visit the SSGC office located near Godown Chowrangi in Korangi Industrial area. At the office, he met an officer named Advani who told him to submit a further Rs50,000 to the contractor.
Shahzad said he works a welder in Mehmoodabad and is unable to pay the hefty payment. He said he has been using gas cylinder and the SSGC will be responsible for any mishap. He urged authorities to provide them the gas connection and resolve the issue.
