NEW DELHI: At least 50 people were killed and more than 100 lost their eyesight after consuming spurious liquor in Bihar’s Chapra
Local media reports suggest the incident took place in Saran district in Bihar, which also triggered a political slugfest in the state assembly. Only a few dozens of casualties have so far been identified as Vijendra Rai, Harendra Ram, Ramji Saha, Amit Ranjan, Sanjay Singh, Kunal Singh, Ajay Giri, Mukesh Sharma, Bharat Ram, Jaidev Singh, Manoj Ram, Mangal Rai, Nasir Hussain, Ramesh Ram, Chandra Ram, Vicky Mahto, Govind Rai, Lalan Ram, Premchand Sah, Dinesh Thakur, Sitaram, Vishwakarma Patel, Jaiprakash Singh, Suren Sah, Jatan Shah, Vikram Raj, Dasrath Mahto, Upendra Ram, Umesh Rai, Vakil Miyan, Chandrashekhar Sha, Anil Thakur, Akhrahul Haque, Shailendra Rai, Surendra Mahto, Dudhnath Tiwari, Bharat Shah and Salauddin Miyan.
Officials said 2 cops, Masrakh Station House Officer (SHO) Ritesh Mishra and Constable Vikesh Tiwari have been suspended with immediate effect for their negligence.
It is pertinent to mention here that the sale and consumption of alcohol were banned in Bihar by the Nitish Kumar government in April 2016. However, the ban has so far remained ineffective.
Earlier on Wednesday, Bihar Minister SK Mahaseth urged the people of the state to give up drinking alcohol. While talking to the media persons Mahaseth said, “Best if you give up drinking. Poison and not liquor are coming here. If we build strength via sports, we might tolerate it but people will have to build that strength. Give it up! It’s prohibited & being wrongly pushed here,” said Mahaseth.
