Prices of various spices have surged by up to 60% in Karachi and other parts of the country ahead of Eid-ul-Adha.
According to a report by a private TV channel, the price of black pepper has sharply risen from Rs. 1600 to Rs. 2500 per kg. Additionally, popular items like qorma masala, biryani masala, and tikka masala are now priced at Rs. 800 per kg.
The report indicated that nearly all spice ingredients have seen a surge of up to 60% over the last two weeks. It is noteworthy that spice consumption increases during Eid-ul-Adha as people prepare various dishes from the meat of sacrificial animals. However, due to a lack of government control, profiteers take advantage of the situation and hike prices.
Moreover, prices of green spices such as garlic, ginger, lemon, mint, cilantro, and green chilies have also witnessed a surge ahead of Eid.
These developments have intensified financial burdens on the public, prompting calls for government intervention to stabilize prices.
