South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has confirmed that he is currently under provisional suspension after testing positive for a recreational drug.
The 29-year-old had abruptly returned from the Indian Premier League (IPL) last month, where he was representing the Gujarat Titans, citing a need to address a “personal matter.” He has now disclosed that his departure was prompted by an adverse analytical finding resulting from a routine drug test.
Neither Rabada nor Cricket South Africa (CSA) has revealed the specific substance involved or the expected duration of the suspension. However, CSA has acknowledged the test result and expressed its disappointment over the incident.
In a statement issued through the South African Cricketers’ Association, Rabada expressed remorse:
“I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me—it goes beyond my personal aspirations. I am serving a provisional suspension and look forward to returning to the game I love.”
Cricket South Africa echoed his sentiments, stating: “The incident is regrettable. However, Rabada has reassured CSA and his supporters of his continued commitment to professional standards and his dedication to the game and the country he represents.”
Rabada, one of South Africa’s premier bowlers, has earned 241 international caps across formats and reached a major career milestone in October by becoming the sixth South African to claim 300 Test wickets. His availability for the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia, scheduled for June 11–15 at Lord’s, now remains uncertain.
