South Africa Under-19 opener Jorich van Schalkwyk has made history by becoming the first player to score a double-century in Youth One Day Internationals (ODIs). He achieved this record in the first match of a tri-series against Zimbabwe Under-19. Schalkwyk scored a brilliant 215 runs off 153 balls, hitting 19 fours and 6 sixes, with a strike rate of 140.52.
Thanks to his superb innings, South Africa U19 posted a huge total of 385 runs. In reply, Zimbabwe U19 were bowled out for just 107 runs, giving South Africa a massive 278-run victory.
Interestingly, Schalkwyk had come close to scoring a double-century earlier. In a match against Bangladesh U19, he remained unbeaten on 164 runs from 156 balls, helping his team chase down 264 runs in 44.4 overs with seven wickets down.
Just 20 days before Schalkwyk’s world record, India’s Vaibhav Suryavanshi had a chance to become the first double-centurion in Youth ODIs. Suryavanshi scored a quick 143 runs from 78 balls against England U19 on July 5. He smashed 10 sixes and 13 fours but got out on the first ball of the 28th over. If he had stayed longer, he could have even scored a triple-century.
Among Indian players, Ambati Rayudu holds the record for the highest score in Youth ODIs with an unbeaten 177 against England in 2002. Raj Angad Bawa is second with 162* against Uganda in 2022. Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill are next on the list, both having scored 160 runs in Youth ODIs.
