The Sindh government has launched an ambitious plan to install solar panels in 500,000 households across the province, marking a significant push towards renewable energy.
Announced by Nasir Hussain Shah, Minister for Energy, during the 7th Solar Exhibition at the Expo Centre in Karachi, this initiative is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to promote solar power and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.
Shah revealed that funds have been allocated in the current budget for the procurement and distribution of these solar panels. The initiative underscores the Sindh government’s commitment to supporting the national solarization efforts. To ensure domestic needs are prioritized, a ban on the export of solar panels will be imposed starting in 2027.
The move reflects Sindh’s broader shift towards renewable energy technologies, including solar and wind power. Shah acknowledged that while electricity from Thar coal is currently the cheapest option, long-term sustainability depends on expanding the use of renewable energy.
Additionally, the Sindh Power Regulatory Authority (SIPRA) will be established to regulate and facilitate the use of renewable energy, ensuring that electricity generated from solar and wind sources is effectively utilized.
