Sindh’s Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced that electric scooters will be distributed to working women and female students through a balloting process.
The government will also provide driving training and cover the cost of obtaining driving licenses.
Addressing a ceremony in Karachi, the senior minister stated that data of underprivileged women from across the country has been compiled, and the initiative to provide housing is part of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s vision.
Sharjeel Memon said Bilawal Bhutto has committed to building 2.1 million free homes, calling it the largest housing initiative in global history. He emphasized that the ownership of these homes will be registered in women’s names.
He noted that 2.1 million houses were destroyed during floods in Sindh, and reiterated that the Pakistan Peoples Party strongly believes in women’s empowerment. He also highlighted that former President Asif Ali Zardari launched the Benazir Income Support Programme for this very purpose.
Memon added that Sindh’s first major transport initiative was the launch of the Pink Bus service, tailored specifically for women. He announced that every year, women across Sindh will be provided with free electric motorbikes. So far, applications have been received from women, but only 140 currently hold a valid driving license.
He further revealed that the procurement process for electric bikes has begun and the scooters will arrive soon. Initially, bikes will be given to women who already have licenses. He also disclosed plans to launch a Pink Taxi service, and added that double-decker buses will be introduced in Karachi next month.
