KARACHI: Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for the Bureau of Supply and Prizes, Dr. Khatu Mal Jeewan while taking notice of the reports regarding the illegal increase in milk and chicken meat prices directed officials concerned to take stern action against profiteers.
On the orders of Dr. Jeewan, the Director-General Bureau of Supply and Prices sent a letter to the commissioner Karachi directing him to take legal action against the profiteers who were illegally raising the prices of milk and poultry in the metropolis, said a statement.
Dr Jeewan has also directed all the concerned officers to take action under “The Sindh Essential Commodities Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Act, 2005”.
Legal action should be taken against the hoarders to stop the illegal increase in the prices of milk and poultry meat, Dr. Khatu Mal Jeewan said. He also directed the officers of the Bureau of Supply and Prizes to extend full support to the district administration with regard to control prices of essential commodities.
On Tuesday, Pakistan Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Senior Vice President of Karachi Division and Adviser to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Mahmood Moulvi had urged the Sindh government to control rising prices of essential commodities and feared that the inflation will add to the woes of the poverty-hit people in the province.
While talking to a delegation of political leaders in his office today, Mahmood Moulvi said prices of consumer items went high due to Sindh government criminal negligence, adding that poor and low-income people bore the burden.
He further said that the provincial government was not taking any practical steps to resolve people’s issues while the PPP ministers, leaders and government spokespersons were lying and giving counterfeit consolation to the people.
Mahmood Moulvi said that due to the incompetence and mismanagement of the Sindh government, the people of Karachi have been deprived of even two meals a day.
“The price of chicken is skyrocketing, the rise in milk and meat prices has broken the backs of the people, the adviser said. The sudden rise in prices is causing great pain to the people,” he had regretted.
The PTI leader said, “Vegetables are available in the market at very low prices but it is worrisome to sell them at many times higher prices in the metropolis. The price of chicken is also being artificially increased. Rising inflation in Karachi ahead of Ramadan is a question mark for the Sindh government,” he added.
Commissioner Karachi should take notice of the increase in the prices of food items in the city and take immediate and effective action against the hikers and bring the prices of milk and meat in line with the rate list issued by the government, Mahmood Moulvi had demanded.
