KARACHI: The provincial government would provide free wifi service to the Awan-e-Liaquat Girls Hostel of the University of Karachi and later on, this service would be available across the campus for the students, faculty members, and researchers.
In the first stage, the Sindh government has provided free wifi service in eight different universities of the province and soon its second phase would be launched.
It was announced by the provincial minister for information science and technology Nawab Muhammad Taimur Talpur. He was the chief guest at the plantation drive launched by the Karachi University Business School.
The KU girls’ hostel would get this service on a priority basis and then we would expand the project to other departments and offices of the University.
He mentioned that the Sindh government has made it mandatory for the public and private sectors to build a green zone in the surroundings of their projects to protect the environment.
He informed the audience that plantation is the topmost priority of the provincial government and the Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah and the Chairman Pakistan Peoples’ Party Bilawal Bhutto both gives its lot of importance.
“I am pleased to see that the KUBS which without any doubt is providing quality education is also taking part in such noble cause and its faculty and students are very active in this regard,” he added.
Earlier, the KU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi said that plantation drives need care and maintenance, and due to negligence large numbers of plants were unable to grow.
He mentioned that the KU Landscape Gardening Council and its secretary Dr Muhammad Faheem Siddiqui are taking good care of every plant and trees on the campus.
He urged that every citizen should take responsibility and participant in plantation drives to bring positive changes in society.
“Millions of citizens are facing challenges due to pollution and with proper plantations, we can reduce the chances and damages of global warming, air pollution, floods, and other natural disasters,” Iraqi said.
He informed the audience that KU is a part of the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Project and allocated 25 acres of land for urban forest and block plantation on the campus.
The KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi shared that Sindh Forest and Wildlife Department would provide saplings and technical facilities in this regard.
Meanwhile, Chairman KUBS Dr Muhammad Asim said that besides providing the best academic activities, the Karachi University Business School is also aware of its social responsibilities.
He mentioned that around 200 plants are provided by the National Youth Forum and Coconut, Mango, Papaya, and Sapodilla (Chikoo) are provided for this year’s drive.
