The government of Sindh is set to distribute 500,000 free solar systems among the poor of the province this year, this was announced by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah during an event in Sukkur on Sunday.
Speaking at the Sindh Solar Energy Project event in Sukkur, Murad Ali Shah mentioned that the vision of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was to relieve the poor from the burden of expensive electricity.
He recalled that in 2012, when they started the solarization program, instead of setting up a grid station in Tharparkar district, they solarized the entire area. Bilawal Bhutto had said that the burden of expensive electricity should not fall on the people, and this led them to engage with the World Bank for a solution.
Shah further stated that solar energy systems would be installed in government buildings, hospitals, and schools, reducing electricity costs for these facilities. He added that the project would provide solar systems to 200,000 homes, allowing the use of a fan, three bulbs, and charging mobile phones.
The Chief Minister revealed that solar systems would be provided to individuals under the Benazir Income Support Program in every district of Sindh, and 500,000 solar systems would be distributed to the poor this year.
He emphasized that they are working to build 21 million homes, a project that has gained global attention.
Murad Ali Shah also highlighted that in time of natural disasters, such as floods, the poor would no longer have to set up tents, as they would have better shelters. He assured that by 2026, 21 million homes would be completed.
