Sialkot held their nerve in a thrilling finale to win the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2024-25, defeating Peshawar by just one wicket at the UBL Sports Complex in Karachi on Sunday.
Chasing a challenging target of 173 runs on a tricky pitch, Sialkot crossed the finish line with nine wickets down, securing their first Quaid-e-Azam Trophy title since 2008.
Earlier, on Day 3, Peshawar was bowled out for 159 in their second innings, with Ali Raza taking a remarkable seven wickets, finishing the match with a total of 10 wickets.
After gaining a 13-run lead in the first innings, Peshawar set a target of 173 runs for Sialkot. Heading into the final innings, Sialkot were the favorites, but Peshawar’s pace attack made the most of the conditions in the final hour of Day 3, taking five quick wickets.
By stumps, Sialkot was reeling at 59 for five, still needing 114 runs with just five wickets remaining.
In the face of mounting pressure, Sialkot’s captain, Imad Butt, played a vital knock of 65 runs in the morning session of Day 4, bringing his team closer to the target. However, he was dismissed when just 20 runs were required.
Shahzaib Bhatti, playing a crucial role, held firm and guided Sialkot to victory with an unbeaten 32 runs.
Peshawar’s Niaz Khan was the standout bowler, taking four wickets for 20 runs in eight overs, while Aamir Khan claimed three wickets.
