Universal Pictures has taken an unusual step by releasing a teaser for Shrek 5 nearly two years ahead of the film’s scheduled release.
The teaser showcases the updated designs of the beloved characters from the Shrek universe and introduces Shrek’s daughter, voiced by Zendaya. The film is directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, with Brad Abelson serving as co-director.
The 27-second snippet features Shrek, his wife Princess Fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz), and Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy). One of the most talked-about aspects of the teaser is the streamlined redesign of the main characters.

However, fans have expressed mixed reactions to the new animation style. One fan commented, “The animation looks so off,” while another added, “Something about the animation just doesn’t scream Shrek; it looks too ‘generic 2025 animation’ IMO.”
Shrek 5 is slated for release on December 23, 2026, marking the first new Shrek film in over 16 years since Shrek Forever After in 2010. The Shrek franchise has been one of DreamWorks Animation’s most successful, starting with the 2001 film that grossed over $488 million worldwide and won the first-ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
