A police officer has been filmed kicking and stamping on the head of a Pakistani man lying on the ground at Manchester Airport. The video, widely shared on social media, was recorded on Wednesday afternoon (July 24).
The dramatic clip quickly garnered thousands of views online and prompted Greater Manchester Police to address the conduct concerns raised.
The video depicts a police officer kicking a young Muslim man in the head while he is lying on the ground. The officer continues to kick the man as his mother desperately tries to intervene.
In the footage, a male officer is seen aiming a taser at a man lying on the ground. Reports suggest the men being beaten by police officers are British Pakistanis. Following the video’s release, five officers involved in the incident have been suspended, and an investigation into the actions of seven officers is underway.
Greater Manchester Police issued a statement claiming that the incident began with an altercation between passengers at the airport. When police arrived, the suspect allegedly assaulted officers during an attempt to apprehend him.
BBC News quoted Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry as saying: “We know that a film of an incident at Manchester Airport that is circulating widely shows an event that is truly shocking, and that people are rightly extremely concerned about. The use of such force in an arrest is an unusual occurrence and one that we understand creates alarm.”
