ISLAMABAD: Kashmir Committee Chairman Shehryar Afridi has stirred another controversy during his visit to the United States.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Afridi can be seen critcising the ‘living conditions’ of women in the United States. Afridi was strolling in New York’s famed Times Square when he pointed towards a homeless woman and said the United States does not give rights to its people.
“See the condition of women in the country which lectures others on human rights,” he said. “This is not a just political slogan but a reality… a ground reality,” he said.
Afridi said all Pakistanis belonging give respect to women. He urged his viewers to stick to their roots and religion. He maintained that women in Pakistan are living under better conditions than in those countries that “pretend to be the champions of human rights”.
After his video surfaced online, many users including journalists, academics and civil society members lashed at Shehryar Afridi for indulging in unnecessary activities while visiting US to represent Kashmiris and causes further embarrassment to Pakistan.

In a tweet, Afridi said it was aimed at highlighting Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Shelter Homes (Panahgah) initiative taken in line with his vision for homeless people in Pakistan, he said in a tweet.
“I lodge strong protest to a biased & opinionated piece by @BBCUrdu on my Vlog at #TimeSquare. I reiterate that my comments were about shelter homes of hon’ble PM @ImranKhanPTI 4 destitute & homeless,” he tweeted.
US Charge d’Affairs to Pakistan Angela Aggeler and the American Embassy was also tagged in the tweet to explain that ‘the contents of BBC article were out of context from his Vlog and malicious in nature’.
