ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday met former president Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in Islamabad to discuss the current political situation ahead of being elected as prime minister.
During the meeting, the PPP leaders congratulated Shehbaz and thanked him for his efforts to ensure the success of the no-confidence motion against the prime minister. The two sides discussed electoral reforms and pledged to work together in the public interest.
Shehbaz thanked the PPP for its support on the no-confidence motion and agreed to further enhance political cooperation in the future. PPP Information Secretary Faisal Karim Kundi and PPP-P Information Secretary Shazia Marri were also present. Shehbaz was accompanied by senior PML-N leaders Khawaja Saad Rafique, Ayaz Sadiq and Marriyum Aurangzeb.
Shehbaz Sharif also discussed the ongoing political situation with JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. He also met the delegations of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), Independent MNAs Ali Wazir and Mohsin Dawar and thanked them for their support in the no-confidence motion. The PML-N president has also sought support in voting for the election of prime minister.
Earlier in the day, Shehbaz submitted his nomination papers at the National Assembly Secretariat to contest the election for the slot of the prime minister. PTI’s Shah Mahmood Qureshi also submitted his papers for the post. The NA Secretary announced that the nomination papers of both candidates were accepted after scrutiny.
Imran Khan was ousted through a no-confidence vote after the NA debated on the matter for more than 12 hours and the political situation in the country took a critical turn. The NA session to elect the new leader of the House will convene at 2pm tomorrow (Monday).
