ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Ayub Afridi has tendered his resignation in order to vacate a seat for the election of Shaukat Tarin to the Upper House of Parliament.
The government has decided to get Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin elected as a senator from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa so he may continue as finance minister. Ayub Afridi is expected to be appointed as Advisor on States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON).
The federal government had appointed Tarin as an adviser after his six-month constitutional term as finance minister ended last week. According to the notification, Shaukat Tarin will hold the status of a federal minister.
He was supposed to get elected as member of parliament, a prerequisite to continue as finance minister as the six-month time limit to elect him as a member of Parliament expired on Friday.
Tarin was appointed as the finance minister on April 17 this year. The government is hopeful of Tarin securing a comfortable win from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the PTI enjoys a majority in the province.
Tarin is currently in Washington where the government is holding talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the sixth review of the $6 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF).
