ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has asserted that Senate polls would be conducted in a traditional way as the electoral process can only be changed after consultation with lawmakers.
Talking to journalists in Islamabad today (Tuesday), the former premier claimed that the Chief Election Commission (CEC) has informed him that change in the election procedure was not possible
“The ordinance issued by the government is no longer valid. Only parliament has the right to amend the Constitution,” Abbasi said, adding that a strong role of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has emerged after the opinion of the apex court.
Lashing out at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), the PML-N senior vice president said, “It is hoped that the president will forward the references carefully in the future. The former presidents forwarded the reference remaining neutral.”
He also expressed hope for the victory of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) member and joint candidate of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) Yousaf Raza Gillani in the Senate elections.
The PML-N leader further said that the country’s politics will take a new turn after tomorrow’s elections. “We cannot expect justice from such a government that is involved in vote theft,” he stated.
