ISLAMABAD: A delegation of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s (PTI) leaders called on the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) at the election commission (ECP) to express the government’s stance in the light of Supreme Court’s opinion on the presidential reference.
The government team included Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood, Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhary and Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan.
Talking to journalists after the meeting today (Monday), Babar Awan said, “In our meeting, we expressed the PTI stance and given reference of the court’s five-member bench.”
“The election commission (ECP) has to take the decision in view of the ground situation. The constitution demands an honest election,” Awan said, adding, “It is fair to remain loyal with the party that has awarded ticket for the election.”
Babar Awan further said it is a decisive phase for election in Pakistan. “It is the government of Imran Khan that has referred the matter of election to the Supreme Court,” he added.
“The open ballot and an identifiable ballot was also the demand of the charter of democracy. The electoral body should ensure transparent elections”, the adviser added.
Taking over the presser, Fawad Chaudhry said, “We have requested the election commission to enforce the decision of the apex court in letter and spirit,” adding that the vote would be secret for the political parties but not for the election commission. “Each and every vote in the election will be identifiable afterwards,” he added.
