ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has dismissed a contempt of court petition against former federal minister Ahsan Iqbal.
The case relates to comments by Ahsan Iqbal when he served as Federal Interior Minister in 2018.
A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandyal delivered its verdict on the admissibility of the contempt of court petition against the former minister.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Bandial remarked that Ahsan Iqbal is a disciplined, serious and intellectual person. He must have said something in his emotions, the judge said.
The judge said it the task of the Supreme Court to decide whether there has been contempt of court. He said the evidence is not available to pursue the case further.
The court declared the contempt of case as inadmissible and demised the petition. The application was heard for the first time in the last five years.
The case relates to when Ahsan Iqbal was serving as the interior minister. On April 25, 2018, Ahsan Iqbal said that we have respect like any military officer or judge. A contempt of court petition was filed against the former federal minister on May 2, 2018.
Ahsan Iqbal served as Minister of Planning, Development, and Reforms in the cabinet of former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.
