KARACHI: Four suspected robbers broke open lockers of a private bank in the Sakhi Hassan area of the metropolis and made off with cash and valuables worth millions of rupees, police said on Sunday.
According to police sources, the robbers remained in the bank branch for almost eight hours and broke open 34 lockers.
The robbers were equipped with gas cutters and cylinders and entered the bank at around 9 pm and left early Sunday morning at 5 pm, sources added.
Police further said a security guard of the bank went out to have dinner and when he returned and opened the bank’s door, the robbers hiding nearby barged into the branch, holding the two guards hostage at gunpoint.
Meanwhile, investigation officials said that the way the robbers committed the heist shows that they had prior inside information.
They said the robbers also took away the bank’s digital video recorder. Meanwhile, the police have taken two security guards into custody and are interrogating him.
Recently, a gang of four armed robbers had looted one million cash from a local bank in the New Karachi area of the metropolis on 17 March.
According to sources, the armed robbers entered a branch of a bank at the New Do-Minute Chowrangi of the metropolis and made security guards and the bank staff hostage. Sources disclosed during the robbery the robbers injured two security guards with rifle blows when they resisted.
According to the bank manager, the criminals entered the bank in daylight and looted over 11, 35,000 rupees cash and fled from the scene. Soon after the incident, area police officers and rangers reached the scene and asked for the details of the incident.
The rangers and police officials also summoned the crime scene unit of the department to the bank. Meanwhile, the Sindh Police chief had taken notice of the bank robbery incident and sought a detailed inquiry report from the DIG Police West district and the DIG CIA.
In CCTV footage of the incident, the robbers could be seen firing with weapons and fleeing from the scene after the crime.
