LAHORE: Legendary musician Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s single ‘Zaroori Tha’ has become the first original non-film music video to hit 1 billion views on YouTube.
Released on the music label Universal Music, the song, with its release 6 years ago, featured Gauhar Khan and Kushal Tandon, who rose to fame following their appearance on the Indian reality TV show, Bigg Boss.
The video, elevated by Rahat’s vocals, had initially crossed the 1 million views mark only 4 days after its release. The renowned singer also shared a post on Instagram expressing happiness and thanked his followers to help him reach another milestone.
“My sincere thanks to everyone involved, especially you the audience, the listeners, and my fans who have always given me so much love and affection. Let’s get to this milestone of 1 billion together,” he posted.

Produced by Salman Ahmed and directed by Rahul Sud, the music was by Sahir. A. Bagga while lyrics were penned down by Khalil-ur-Rehman. It may be recalled that the song, which was released on June 8, 2014, was also included in the 2015 Indian film ‘Hamari Adhoori Kahani’.
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was also the first Pakistani singer to bag 5 million subscribers on YouTube. He began formally training for his skill at the age of seven, and has since released more than 50 albums including performing at numerous high-profile concerts across the world.
