Russian President Vladimir Putin made a telephone call to his American counterpart, Donald Trump, during which both leaders discussed the escalating Israel-Iran tensions. Vladimir Putin condemned the Israeli attacks on Iran.
According to a international. media, the Russian president held a 50-minute long telephone conversation with the American president on Saturday, in which there was a detailed discussion about the ongoing tension between Israel and Iran.
During the call, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin emphasized the need for efforts to reduce tensions between Israel and Iran. Kremlin spokesperson Yuri Ushakov stated that Putin condemned the Israeli military action against Iran and expressed concern over the risks of further deterioration of the situation.
Trump, on his social media platform “Truth Social,” stated that most of the conversation focused on Middle East issues; however, he told Putin that Russia should end the war in Ukraine.
Later, while speaking to journalists, Yuri Ushakov said that Vladimir Putin condemned the Israeli military operation against Iran and expressed deep concern over the potential escalation of the conflict, saying it could have unpredictable consequences for the Middle East.
He said that Trump called the Middle East situation “extremely concerning,” but both leaders did not rule out the possibility of resuming negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
He further said that American negotiators are ready to talk with Iranian representatives, and Oman will continue its role as a mediator. However, the latest round of negotiations scheduled in Oman on Sunday has been canceled.
The Kremlin spokesperson said that Putin reminded Trump that prior to the escalation, Russia had proposed specific steps that could have helped achieve an acceptable agreement between the U.S. and Iran on Iran’s nuclear program.
“Russia’s principled stance and interest in a peaceful resolution of the issue remain unchanged, and as President Putin said, Russia will continue working on that basis.” Kremlin spokesperson added.
