LAHORE: In a bid to prevent kite flying in the province, the Punjab government has decided to amend the Kite Flying Prohibition Ordinance of 2001.
According to the state-run APP, the Punjab Law Department, in consultation with the Standing Committee on Law, has sent a draft to the Chief Minister’s Office. The amended ordinance proposes imprisonment ranging from 6 months to 3 years and a fine of up to five lakh rupees for kite makers. Moreover, the ordinance includes fines for children caught flying kites and recommends punishment for their parents.
Provincial Law Minister Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bherth stated that the purpose of these amendments is to target the main offenders more effectively. “The ordinance will also impose fines on children and recommend punishment for their parents,” the APP reported.
It should be noted that kite flying has long been a popular activity in South Asia.
