In a bid to ensure peace and security during the holy month of Muharram, the Punjab Police has ramped up its crackdown on those spreading hate and objectionable content on social media.
According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, 35 incidents of hate speech and objectionable content were reported on various social media platforms in the past 24 hours alone. This includes 22 incidents on Facebook, five on WhatsApp, and eight on other platforms.
As part of its ongoing efforts, 20 cases have been registered, and 22 individuals have been arrested in the last day for allegedly sharing inflammatory or sectarian material online.
The spokesperson further revealed that in the past five days, the total number of cases registered has climbed to 103, with 119 arrests made in connection with the dissemination of provocative content.
Punjab Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar, reaffirming the department’s zero-tolerance policy, said, “Those who spread religious hatred, incitement, and sectarianism on social media do not deserve any concession.”
He said the Punjab Police is committed to making Muharram a month of peace and religious harmony, and that strict action will continue against all elements involved in online propaganda and incitement.
