In a groundbreaking move to enhance road safety, the Punjab Police achieved a significant milestone by issuing a record-breaking 111,000 driving licenses in a single day.
This monumental initiative came in response to a tragic incident in Lahore, which prompted a renewed focus on enforcing driving regulations and cracking down on individuals operating vehicles without valid licenses.
The issued licenses encompass a variety of categories, including learning permits, national licenses, and even international licenses. The distribution breakdown indicates that 27,000 licenses were granted in Lahore alone, underscoring the urgency and scale of the initiative. Other cities across the region also experienced substantial increases in the number of licenses issued, reflecting a comprehensive effort to address the issue at a broader level.
As part of this drive to instill responsible driving habits, the Punjab government implemented a significant change in the driving license fee structure. Effective December 5, the driving license fee was raised from Rs60 to Rs1,000. Despite this increase, individuals still have the opportunity to apply for licenses at the old fee until December 31. This transitional period provides a grace period for residents to obtain their licenses at a lower cost, incentivizing prompt compliance with the updated fee structure.
The primary objective of these measures is to improve road safety by ensuring that all drivers possess valid licenses. By setting a record in issuing licenses, the Punjab Police and government aim to bring a substantial number of drivers into compliance with licensing regulations.
