An Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad has sentenced 10 individuals, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Member of National Assembly Abdul Latif, to 10 years in prison in the case related to the violent protests of May 9, 2023.
The case was registered at the Ramna police station and pertains to the unrest that followed the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The court convicted the accused on charges including attacking a police station, inciting violence among the public, and damaging government property, and issued sentences under various sections accordingly.
According to the court’s decision, the sentences include: 5 years for attempted murder of police personnel, 4 years for setting a motorcycle on fire, 3 years for obstructing official police duty, and 1 year for conspiracy to commit crimes through an unlawful assembly.
Addressing MNA Abdul Latif, the court stated that he faced serious charges such as attacking a police station, which were proven through the testimonies of 20 government witnesses, including magistrates.
In his remarks, the Anti-Terrorism Court judge said that protests should be peaceful and that attacks on state institutions are unacceptable. The judge stated: “You are accused of attacking police stations in Islamabad. If our own people start attacking police stations, this country will become unlivable.”
