The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has finalized a list of names for 14 women reserved seats for Punjab assembly.
On July 11, the Supreme Court set aside the Peshawar High Court and Election Commission verdicts, declaring PTI eligible for reserved seats in the case of the Sunni Ittehad Council.
The 8-5 majority verdict was announced by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, who heads a 13-member full court of the Supreme Court. The proceedings are being broadcast live. All the judges have recognized PTI as a legal and competent party.
The Supreme Court declared that the deprivation of an election symbol does not terminate the right of a party to participate in elections. The PTI was and is a political party. The Election Commission submitted the data of 80 candidates to the Supreme Court.
Aliya Hamza, a former member of the National Assembly, Kanwal Shauzab, President of PTI Women’s Wing, and Rubina Shaheen, General Secretary of Women’s Wing, are among the names being considered for the reserved seats. Also on the list are Shahnaz Tariq, President of the Women’s Wing Central Punjab, and Seemabia Tahir, Farukhanda Kokab, the previous President of Northern Punjab.
Similarly, the list includes Dr. Misbah Zafar, the General Secretary of Punjab, Rubiya Jamil, a former member of the National Assembly, and Rehana Dar, a contender from Sialkot in the general elections scheduled for February 2024. The names of Dr. Nausheen Hamid, the former President of Women’s Wing Central Punjab, and Farah Agha, the former President of Women’s Wing Rawalpindi, are also included for the reserved seats in the National Assembly from Punjab, along with Khadija Shah.
The list of candidates for reserved seats in the National Assembly also includes Firdous Rehana and Rabia Cheema, the wife of former governor of Punjab Umar Cheema. The list will get final approval from former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
