KARACHI: Owners of the marriage halls have staged a protest today (Monday) against the ‘illegal demolition’ of halls in Karachi’s Korangi area.
According to details, the protesting owners along with the workers observed a sit-in at the main Korangi Road, resulting in a heavy traffic jam on both sides of the road.
Meanwhile, the local administration has also deployed a large contingent of police at the place to maintain law and order. The protestors said that their marriage halls are built on the legally acquired land and claimed to have ownership documents.
They alleged that the local administration was threatening to demolish their halls. The move will create unemployment for thousands, they added. They further said that they would observe a hunger strike along with the workers if their demands were not met.
Talking to media, the protestors said, “We have already been suffering due to the impact of the coronavirus lockdown,” adding that in case of the demolition of the halls, thousands of people would lose jobs.
Last year, Director-General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), Iftikhar Qaimkhani, had sought list of buildings, wedding halls and other structures built illegally in the city so timely action could be taken against them.
