ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi has emphasized the need for construction of dams to avert devastating floods in the country.
Addressing the joint sitting of the Parliament in Islamabad on Thursday, he said this will also help store water for use in difficult times.
The President said the country at present is faced with the biggest problem of floods which has killed over fifteen hundred people.
He appreciated federal and provincial governments, NDMA, PDMAs and the armed forces for their timely response to the flood relief activities.
He said both human and material losses would have been far higher if they had not acted in a timely manner.

“The flood damaged our crops and Pakistan should pay attention to crop insurance, as it will help us get international aid and deal with the challenges,” the president said.
“Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy and to improve the sector, it is important that we look at nations which can provide us with technical support in this regard,” he said, adding that we must learn from a nation like the Netherlands which is 19% smaller than Pakistan but is the second biggest exporter of food in the world.
