ISLAMABAD: The recently reported meeting at the President House has sparked curiosity amid the unpredictability of the general elections, with some speculating that President Alvi may announce the election’s schedule in the coming days.
According to reports, the meeting took place on the fourth floor of Aiwan-e-Sadr (Presidency), which houses the president’s office. The personnel was also forbidden from approaching the area on the fourth floor of the Aiwan-e-Sadr during the meeting.
What allegedly occurred when the ‘three elders’ got together? The President House has not made any statements regarding this. However, there have been a lot of rumors on social media in light of the nation’s current circumstances.
The president may reveal the date of the general election within the next seventy-two hours, according to some rumors. The president had requested a meeting to decide the date for impending elections in a letter to the top election commissioner. The CEC, however, had declined a meeting, claiming that the Election Act of 2017’s Article 57 gave the commission the right to determine the election’s date. The similar response to the president’s request for counsel came from the Ministry of Law.
There were speculations that the president could announce the date of elections under Article 58 of the constitution, and Friday’s meeting was important in that context.
The president had tweeted that he had not ratified the measures, which eventually became law, relating the Army Act and the Official Secrets Act modifications. This could be another topic of discussion for the meeting.
The conclusion of the president’s term, which will conclude on September 8, is a third factor. The President House has not officially stated that he will return home after serving his full term as president. However, the president is permitted by the Constitution to continue serving until a successor takes over.
Meanwhile, a schedule of the president’s activities issued for the next week shows that President Arif Alvi will be going to Lahore on a four-day visit starting today (Sunday), and will return on Sept 7.
