ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister and PPP leader, Yousaf Raza Gillani has sought the support of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) in the election of Senate Chairman.
After a meeting with MQM-P’s leadership on Saturday, Gillani said his party had already met the MQM at a provincial level, following which he and the PPP chairman were given the go-ahead to meet them.
The PPP leader said he was thankful to the MQM for its support during his term as prime minister of the country when the PPP required support, and that they had done a lot of work together.
He said, “Today too, for supremacy of parliament and stability in this country, PPP requested them for support. On behalf of the PDM, I would request them to support us,” said Gilani, who was accompanied by other senior PPP leaders.
To a question, Gilani said the opposition would decide on a name for the Senate deputy chairperson with consensus in the upcoming meeting of the opposition alliance’s leadership. The PPP leader said he would put forward the desire of the MQM-P to be given the position in the PDM meeting.
On this occasion, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said the doors of his party were open for all political forces and ideologies, adding that “talks between party are very imperative for Pakistan’s politics and democracy”.
The MQM itself had invited Gilani since he was a possible candidate for the Senate chairman election, he revealed. He said his party would also be called a meeting of its Coordination Committee to discuss various issues such as the Senate chairman election after which it would reach “a final decision”.
