PESHAWAR: A policeman was martyred and another injured in a hand grenade attack in Peshawar’s Karkhano Market today (Friday), the police said.
According to details, an unidentified person had hurled a grenade at the police mobile during an operation against COVID-19 SOP violations. However, Peshawar CCPO Abbas Ahsan later clarified that the mobile was on a routine patrol when it was targeted.
The police official further said there were four police personnel seated in the mobile at the time of the attack. The deceased police official was identified as the police team in-charge Ibn Amin.
Talking to journalists, SSP Operations Peshawar Yasir Afridi said the investigation had determined that a hand grenade was hurled towards the driving seat of the police mobile. SSP Afridi said further information would be shared as CCTV cameras were recovered.
Terming the incident “saddening” for the city, he said the police would continue to stand resolutely no matter how much the enemy is scheming such plans. “We will give as many sacrifices as needed for this city,” SSP Afridi said.
Meanwhile, law enforces said that rescue teams and additional police personnel have been dispatched to the crime scene. The martyred cop’s body and the injured have been admitted to the Hayatabad Medical Complex.
In October 2020, at least eight people were killed and around 120 others injured when a timed device went off inside a mosque in Peshawar. A month before that, five people were killed and two others injured in a blast in the Akbarpura area of Nowshera.
