RAWALPINDI: Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested two suspects for their alleged involvement in raping and filming a woman in Rawalpindi.
According to sources, on a tip-off, police conducted a raid in the New Town area of Rawalpindi and arrested two suspects Majid and Hassam, over their alleged involvement in a rape incident.
The woman in a complaint claimed that both the accused sexually abused her and also filmed the act. The police have also registered a case at the New Town police station.
Police said a DNA test of the woman and the two suspects would be performed to ascertain the facts. On October 26, a female student of Punjab’s Government College (GC) University was allegedly sexually abused by four men.
According to the police sources, the young girl was raped by her classmate, identified as Shahid, and his three friends. They also filmed the sexual assault.
The police have arrested Shahid after lodging a first information report (FIR) of the incident.
Sexual violence against women is on the rise in the country with several cases reported on a daily basis. Earlier, the Punjab police department had said more than 2500 rape cases reported in the province during the last eight months of the current year.
According to a report issued by the Punjab Police, the crime rate in Punjab increased by 14 percent in the province during the ongoing year as compared to the previous year.
More than 328, 00 rape cases were reported in different areas of the province during the last eight months, according to data compiled by the police department.
The report said more than 160 murder cases were reported from January 01 till August 10, while the robbery was reported 11,587 times in Punjab.
