ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister Housing and Works and PML-Q leader Tariq Bashir Cheema has resigned from his post.
The decision comes after Prime Minister Imran Khan decided to appoint PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervez Elahi. The resignation shows a rift with the PML-Q over supporting the prime minister in the no-confidence motion.
Federal Minister Tariq Bashir Cheema resigned after seeking permission from PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain. Cheema said that he has resigned from the cabinet and will vote against Imran Khan in the no-trust motion. In a Tweet, Chema said his conscience does not allow him to vote to Prime Minister Imran Khan.
In his resignation letter to the prime minister, Cheema said he is tendering his resignation due to “inability of the government to bring stability to the democratic institutions and resolve serious governance issue in the provinces.”

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has nominated PML-Q’s Chaudhry Pervez Elahi for the post.
“All issues were settled in the meeting. PML-Q expresses confidence in PM and announces support. Chief Minister Usman Bazdar tenders his resignation to PM. Prime Minister Imran Khan has decided to nominate Chaudhry Pervez Elahi as the new Chief Minister of Punjab,” Habib wrote on Twitter.
The Opposition had submitted a no-confidence motion signed by total of 126 lawmakers including Rana Mashood, Ramzan Siddique, Malik Ahmed and Mian Naseer from opposition parties.
