LAHORE: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shahbaz Sharif was released from Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat central jail on Friday.
After the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued the former Punjab chief minister’s bail order, his lawyer Azam Nazeer Tarar deposited surety bonds in the accountability court number 2.
After reviewing the bonds, the LHC issued his release orders after which the PML-N president was allowed to leave prison. Kot Lakhpat Jail Superintendent Asad Warriach also confirmed Shehbaz’s release who left for his Model Town residence.
A small number of workers gathered outside the prison to welcome the PML-N president. They showered rose petals on his car to show appreciation for the former Punjab chief minister.
On Thursday, Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, who headed the bench, announced a short order in the open court with Justice Aalia Neelum and Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi also present.
“We admit the petitioner to post-arrest bail subject to his furnishing bail bonds in the sum of Rs5 million with two sureties each in the like amount to the satisfaction of the learned trial court,” read the short order signed by all the three judges.
NAB had arrested Sharif in September 2020 after a bail plea he had filed was turned down and the interim bail was cancelled by the LHC. The arrest was made in a money-laundering and assets beyond means case filed by NAB earlier.
