ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has termed the criticism over Pakistan China Economic Corridor (CPEC) as irresponsible.
The Prime Minister rejected the suggestion that the CPEC was a debt trap, he termed it as a “foolish thing”.
According to the prime minister, China helped us and lend us debt is barely 5 or 6 percent of the total portfolio.
He further said that China helped Pakistan with investment and gave the opportunity to attract foreign investment towards it.
Imran Khan further said that when the Chinese came to help Pakistan with this Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and CPEC, our country was in difficult times.
The prime minister said, “So we are very grateful to the Chinese that they came and rescued us.”
The comment of Imran Khan came after when Alice Wells, a US diplomat who recently visited Pakistan had claimed that the debt burden of Pakistan was growing due to Chinese financing. She also touched on the cost escalation in CPEC projects and questioned the integrity of the companies running them.
